Renaissance of the Lessons of Darkness

Concert "Lessons in Darkness" by Couperin, Marin Marais, Monsieur de Sainte Colombe and Jean-Baptiste Médard with projection.

It is a work created by two academics and artists – the composer Jean-Baptiste Médard and the photographer Jean-Pierre Bertin-Maghit – brought together by musicologist Frédéric Billiet to give a contemporary version of François Couperin’s Deuxième Leçon de ténèbres (1668-1733). On the text of Jeremiah’s Lamentations, introduced by the Hebrew letters (Vau, Zain, Heth, Teth), the candles were then extinguished one by one to plunge the elite into darkness. Light and darkness, like life and death, converge in Jean-Pierre Bertin-Maghit’s photographs and in this suite of baroque and contemporary musical pieces served by the luminosity of Luanda Sequeira’s high-pitched voice and the dark timbre of Ronald Alonso’s viola da gamba.
