The Renaissance Vintages

On the occasion of the “500 years of Renaissance(S)” in the Centre Val de Loire region, the Cheverny winegrowers are presenting two special vintages;
a white wine in AOC Cour Cheverny and a red wine in AOC Cheverny.

Ten winegrowers from the AOC Cheverny and Cour Cheverny collectively participate in these white and red “Renaissance” vintages. They will only be sold in the wine houses of the appellations, which are excellent showcases, judiciously located at the entrance to the Château de Cheverny for one, and on the Place Saint Louis de Chambord for the other.

This Renaissance vintage takes on its full meaning, since the Romorantin grape variety of the Cheverny Court was, according to legend, introduced by François I. He brought 80,000 vines from Burgundy to the Loire Valley to settle them around the town of Romorantin, in a place called “Le clos des Baunes” where Louise de Savoie, his mother, often stayed. The first project envisaged that Francis I wanted to build a castle at this place but it was Chambord. From this dream, only one grape variety, Romorantin, would remain.

Very original, this grape variety gives a lot of character and body to the wine. Today, the Cour Cheverny appellation, located between the Loire and Sologne, holds the exclusive right to use it. This appellation was first named, in May 1949, “Mont Prés-Chambord, Cour Cheverny” with 4 villages (Mont prés-Chambord, Huisseau sur Cosson, Cour Cheverny and Cheverny) as its geographical area, to cover the 11 original communes of the King’s court, and a designation “AOC Cour Cheverny” in March 1993. The Romorantin grape variety finds its full potential on the siliceous soils of the vineyard to give birth to a distinctive and original white wine. With the rigour of local winegrowers, the grape variety was able to express its full potential. Cour Cheverny is the only appellation that can claim this unique grape variety, Romorantin, a royal wine!
