Geoffroy Tory de Bourges, libraire imprimeur humaniste (1480-1533)

Du 20/09/2019 au 18/01/2020
8 Place des 4 Piliers, 18000 Bourges, France

Through a collection of works and archival material from the Renaissance period, some of which were borrowed from major French libraries, the exhibition will follow Geoffroy Tory’s biographical journey: from his Berruyère origins to his humanist training in Italy, from his scholarship and research on the book arts to his work as a reformer of typography and the French language in the service of royal politics. At the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, during the so-called French Renaissance period, Geoffroy Tory was one of the main witnesses and actors of the birth of the modern book, the bookstore and its uses, the renewal of the arts and knowledge.

The exhibition will also show macrophotographs from the Champ fleury, Geoffroy Tory’s treatise, of which the Bibliothèque de Bourges keeps a copy of the original edition (1529). Geoffroy Tory’s “legacies” in contemporary creation will close the tour, in particular by presenting the work of a seminar conducted with a group of students from the École nationale supérieure d’art de Bourges by the teacher and artist Ferenc Grof.
